Vishal Bhardwaj, one of the most well-known directors in Hindi cinema, hasn’t produced one of his signature zany criminal comedies in a while. But to fill that gap, we have the brand-new movie Kuttey (or “Dogs” in Hindi). With his son Asmaan Bhardwaj, who is directing Kuttey, Bhardwaj co-wrote the screenplay. The movie just got its first trailer.

Kuttey follows the antics of three groups of criminals tailing a van transporting millions of dollars, with a tone reminiscent of a Quentin Tarantino film – this is the second time in as many months that we’ve got a Hindi tribute to Tarantino. As the gangs collide, bullets fly, but they soon realise that they are all fighting for the same bone.

One character calls for a standoff between police and thieves but is betrayed in the trailer’s opening and closing scenes. Fans of the cult movie Kaminey, directed by the older Bhardwaj, will be reminded of the film by the rain-soaked images (and the instantly recognised musical cue right at the conclusion). The storyline is purposefully unclear, perhaps to preserve the element of surprise, but the language is wildly vulgar and the violence is happily gratuitous.
