A limited series based on the Uphaar Cinema fire in the 1990s was headed by director Prashant Nair (Umrika, Tryst With Destiny). The Netflix original series, Trial By Fire, will start streaming on January 13th, 2023.

59 people perished and over 100 were wounded when a fire engulfed South Delhi’s Uphaar Cinema on June 13, 1997, as JP Dutta’s Border was being seen there.

Later, the victims established The Association of Uphaar Fire Tragedy Victims, which won a significant civil compensation lawsuit. Trial by Fire: The Tragic Tale of the Uphaar Fire Catastrophe, written by Neelam and Shekhar Krishnamoorthy, is a bestseller that details the tragedy.

The terrible journey of Neelam and Shekhar Krishnamoorthy, who lost their two children in the fire, is portrayed in Prashant’s series. The limited series “looks at the other lives impacted and ruined by the fire while also looking at their hardships and tribulations in the search of justice over twenty-four years.”

Rajshri Deshpande, Abhay Deol, Rajesh Tailang, Ashish Vidyarthi, Anupam Kher, Ratna Pathak, Shilpa Shukla, and Shardul Bharadwaj are among the cast members of Trial By Fire.

Neelam and Shekhar Krishnamoorthy are inspirational models of the type of tenacity and grit it takes to shift the needle even marginally in our country, according to director and showrunner Prashant. It is genuinely horrifying what happened to them and how they were compelled to struggle for justice, and, regrettably, there are numerous other individuals in similar situations today. We are appreciative of Netflix for being such brave collaborators in this project.
