The International Indian Film Academy (IIFA) Awards nominations are led by Gangubai Kathiawadi and Brahmastra Part One: Shiva, two of Alia Bhatt’s blockbusters from the year 2022.
The 23rd edition of the IIFA Awards, which will be hosted at Yas Island in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates, in February 2023, has released the nominees for the popular categories.
Eight nominations were given to Gangubai Kathiawadi, with Sanjay Leela Bhansali winning best director and best picture and Alia Bhatt winning best actress (female).
Bhansali is a candidate for best music director in addition to his nomination for best director.
Mafia Queens of Mumbai, a book by renowned author Hussain Zaidi, was used as the inspiration for the movie. Vijay Raaz is nominated for best supporting actor (male), best playback vocalist (female), best plot (adapted), and best lyrics.
Her on-screen spouse Ranbir Kapoor appears in Bhatt’s Brahmastra Part One: Shiva, which is competing for accolades in the categories of best director, best supporting actor (male and female), best music director, best original plot, best playback vocalist (male and female), and best lyrics. Darlings, Drishyam 2, Vikram Vedha, and Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2 are the other films vying for the best picture award.
Bhansali and Ayan Mukerji of Brahmastra Part One: Shiva fame are competing for the best director award with Anees Bazmee of Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2, Jasmeet K Reen of Darlings, Vasan Bala of Monica O My Darling, and R Madhavan (Rocketry: The Nambi Effect).
Bhatt received a second nomination for her portrayal in Darlings, her first film as a producer, in the category of best actor (female).
Aamil Keeyan Khan and Abhishek Pathak’s Drishyam 2, S Hussain Zaidi and Jane Borges’ Gangubai Kathiawadi, Yogesh Chandekar’s Monica O My Darling, Madhavan’s Poetry: The Nambi Effect, and Pushkar, Gayatri, and BA Fida are the candidates for best tale (adapted) (Vikram Vedha).
The Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi (DCT Abu Dhabi) and Miral, Abu Dhabi’s premier curator of immersive locations and experiences, are working together to host the annual gala.
