Ranbir Kapoor recently attended the Red Sea International Film Festival in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, sporting a beard and wearing a blue suit. On the eve of the event, he spoke with Deadline about his box office failures, Bollywood’s struggles in theatres, and his long-term goal of becoming a director.

The box office failure Shamshera was, but the biggest error I made was that I glued on a beard, Ranbir remarked, describing it as the “hardest he has worked on.”

Ranbir was referring to the fake beard he sported for the movie. “It feels like your face is melting when you’re shooting in the heat and you stick on a beard.”

Additionally, the actor discussed his 2017 movie Jagga Jasoos. It’s a movie that I made. It was a personal endeavour. It was directed by Anurag Basu. It was a very heartwarming and sweet idea, but it didn’t do well, which really hurt,” he said. “That’s the only film in my career that hurt me.”

Ranbir said to Deadline of Hindi movies’ poor box office results, “It’s been quite horrible these last several years. I believe that with excellent storytelling and renewed vigour, Indian cinema returns. It seems that the entire tradition of going to the theatre for a community screening is disappearing and is only practised for expensive movies.

Additionally, the actor lauded South Asian cinema and movies like K.G.F. 2 and RRR. Ranbir also revealed to Deadline that his long-term goal is to take a position behind the camera, saying, “They are really doing fantastic with the storytelling.”

“I’ve always wished I could direct and produce a film. However, I truly haven’t had the bravery to create a story, he admitted.

I’ve always waited for a narrative to naturally occur to me. However, I’m not a writer, and I find it really difficult to express my ideas to other people. To start directing movies and, ideally, acting in them is something I’m striving toward and has been a part of my ten-year goal.

The next movies that Ranbir will appear in are Animal by Sandeep Reddy Vanga and an unnamed romantic comedy with Shraddha Kapoor.
