Walt Disney Pictures is working on a third installment in the popular coming-of-age comedy franchise “The Princess Diaries.”Aadrita Mukerji, best known for her roles in “Supergirl” and “Reacher,” is writing the script for the next installment.According to entertainment website “The Hollywood Reporter,” the new project is not a reboot but rather a continuation of the film series starring Anne Hathaway.The casting of Hathaway has not yet been confirmed.In the past, the Oscar-winning actress publicly stated that she would return to Genovia’s world if the potential third film moved past the script stage.

Hathaway portrayed Mia Thermopolis, an American teenager who discovers she is the heir to the throne of the fictional European kingdom of Genovia, in the first episode of “The Princess Diaries,” which debuted in 2001.Clarisse Renaldi, Mia’s grandmother and Queen regent of Genovia, was played by veteran actress Julie Andrews.The film, loosely based on the novel by Meg Cabot, made 165.3 million dollars worldwide at the box office.For “Princess Diaries 2:” a sequel released in 2004, Hathaway and Andrews reprised their roles.”Royal Engagement,” which raised global funds totaling 134.7 million dollars.Both installments were directed by the late filmmaker Garry Marshall.The upcoming role is also supported by Debra Martin Chase, the producer of the first two “Princess Diaries” films.The film’s executive producer is Melissa Stack, best known for her role in the comedy starring Cameron Diaz, who is attached to the project.
