We all know that James Cameron has long-held ambitions to produce five Avatar movies, the first of which will debut in theatres on December 16. Although he acknowledges it might not be him who finishes telling that story, Cameron has talked extensively about the financial success of the sequel while promoting Avatar: The Way of Water.

He added in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter: “Considering that the third movie has already been shot, we will likely finish it. For it not to seem like it was worth the extra expense, we’d have to truly tank. We would need to abandon a burning hole in the ground.”

He continues by admitting that he might not be physically capable of continuing at that moment. “By then, I would be 89. Obviously, given the amount of energy needed, I won’t be able to continue producing Avatar movies indefinitely. No matter how intelligent a director you are, you don’t know how to accomplish this, so I would need to teach someone.”

Along with brand-new cast members Kate Winslet, Cliff Curtis, Edie Falco, Michelle Yeoh, Jemaine Clement, Oona Chaplin, and Vin Diesel, The Way of Water sees the return of Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldana, Matt Gerald, Joel David Moore, CCH Pounder, Dileep Rao, Sigourney Weaver, Stephen Lang, and Giovanni Ribisi to Pandora.
