Filmmaker Pradeep Sarkar, known for helming films like Parineeta (2005), Laaga Chunari Mein Daag (2007) and Mardaani (2014), passed away on Friday. He was 67.

Director Hansal Mehta took to Twitter today to make the announcement. “Pradeep Sarkar. Dada. RIP,” he wrote along with a picture of the deceased.

As per reports, Sarkar was on dialysis and his potassium levels had dropped drastically. When his condition deteriorated, he was rushed to a hospital at 3am, where he eventually passed away.

Before venturing into films, Sarkar was known to direct commercials. He also helmed several acclaimed music videos like Shubha Mudgal’s ‘Ab Ke Saawan’, Euphoria’s ‘Dhoom Pichak Dhoom’ and ‘Maaeri’, Sultan Khan’s ‘Piya Basanti’ and Bhupen Hazarika’s ‘Ganga’.

He started off in films as an editor on Rajkumar Hirani’s Munnabhai M.B.B.S (2003). Later he went on to direct Parineeta, Laaga Chunari Mein Daag, Lafangey Parindey (2010), Mardaani and Helicopter Eela (2018). He also directed web series like Coldd Lassi Aur Chicken Masala (2019), Forbidden Love (2020) and the OTT film Duranga (2022).

In October last year, Kangana Ranaut had announced that she would be working with Sarkar on his upcoming film Noti Binodini on 19th century Bengali theatre artist Binodini Dasi.
