An unexpected cameo by none other than Anushka Sharma can be seen in Anvita Dutt’s melancholy, evocative, and controversial Qala, which is streaming on Netflix as of today.
Anushka, whose brother Karnesh directs Qala, is depicted in a black-and-white montage as a 1940s actress lip-syncing the song performed by Tripti Dimri’s Qala Manjushree.
Anushka Sharma is seen singing in a scene from the movie Qala as the audience applauds her performance.
The scene is a jab at how playback singers used to get all the credit for film soundtracks, but Lata Mangeshkar changed that when she entered the business by having the name of the actress who played the character on the vinyl record instead of the playback singer.
Qala nostalgically recalls the time before Mangeshkar, when playback singers were unnoticeable figures. Majrooh, a progressive lyricist played by Varun Grover and based on Majrooh Sultanpuri.
