On Saturday, January 7, the National Society of Film Critics gathered for the 57th annual awards in New York and Los Angeles. TR, directed by Todd Field, won three prizes in all this year, including Best Picture.

Tár, directed by Field for the first time since his drama Little Children from 2006, portrays the story of the title character Lydia Tár (Cate Blanchett), a highly accomplished and well-known composer-conductor, and her fall from grace. Blanchett was also given the Best Actress prize by the National Society of Film Critics, while Field, who also wrote the screenplay for TR, got Best Screenplay. For Nina Hoss’ performance, the movie was also recognised as a Runner-Up in the Best Supporting Actress category. The Banshees of Inisherin and the Polish movie EO are two other notable winners, each taking home two prizes. In the former, Kerry Condon received Best Supporting Actress, while Colin Farrell won Best Actor for his work in the Martin McDonagh movie After Yang. EO

The renowned drama film Drive My Car, directed by Ryusuke Hamaguchi, earned the National Society of Film Critics’ Best Picture award last year. Hamaguchi also got the Best Director award for his work on the 2021 films Wheel of Fortune and Fantasy. Hidetoshi Nishijima, the star of Drive My Car, was also named the Best Actor in the previous year’s ceremony. The movie went on to win Best International Feature Film after being nominated for five Academy Awards, including Best Picture. If this success carries over into this year’s awards season, we’ll have to wait and see.
