Amid heavy rumors that Jason Momoa will be hanging up the trident after the release of Aquaman 2 to pursue a new role as Lobo in the DCU, James Gunn and Peter Safran themselves are clearing the air. On Tuesday, Gunn and his fellow DC Studios boss, Peter Safran, announced a slew of upcoming projects that are on their slate for the DCU. This includes new projects for superheroes like Batman, Superman, and Wonder Woman, but there was no mention of either Aquaman nor Lobo.

But there’s a reason for that, as Gunn and Safran shared during a press event where he and Safran announced their DCU plans. Per Collider, the pair directly addressed Momoa’s future in the DCU, touching on the rumors he’d be leaving the Aquaman role behind for a Lobo movie. Safran says that Momoa will only be playing one character in the DCU, shutting down the notion that he could play both of these characters moving forward. With that said, Safran says it’s “too early” to say if Momoa will be sticking around as Aquaman or if he’ll make an immediate switch to playing Lobo.

“Jason always thought Aquaman was a trilogy in his own mind,” Safran shared, teasing a third installment of the Aquaman series. “But he also loves Lobo. He’s been very clear about that, too. He’s never gonna play two characters, but no decision has been made.”

Gunn concurred that Momoa’s future in the DCU is still in question but promised that everyone involved will soon “figure that out.”
