It’s that time of year again! The British Academy of Film and Television Arts has unveiled the coveted list of 24 categories for the 2023 BAFTAs. Leading the way with a confident 15 nods—including Best Film and Adapted Screenplay—is Netflix’s war epic All Quiet on the Western Front.

A surprising lead, the movie is based on Erich Maria Remarque’s novel of the same title and unpacks the brutal reality of war. The film was clearly a hit with viewers, securing an impressive 90% on Rotten Tomatoes’ audience score, but it’s still an impressive feat given that it beat out Tom Cruise’s action-packed extravaganza Top Gun: Maverick – one of the best-performing films of last year.

Following closely behind is Martin McDonagh’s comedy-drama The Banshees of Inisherin with 14 nods including big hitters such as Best Film and Leading Actor. Baz Luhrmann’s Elvis, which saw Austin Butler shine as the musical icon, and sci-fi spectacle Everything Everywhere All At Once both secured an impressive 12 mentions whilst Top Gun: Maverick, Tár, Aftersun and Babylon each bagged nominations in eight categories.
