Fans of the highly anticipated thriller series 1899 on Netflix have a gloomy start to the new year. The show’s creators, Baran bo Odar and Jantje Friese, announced on social media that the streaming behemoth had cancelled the series after just one season.

“With a deep heart, we must inform you that 1899 will not be renewed,” the message said. As we did with Dark, we would have wanted to wrap up this amazing trip with a second and third season. But occasionally things don’t go as you had hoped. Such is life. We are aware that millions of fans would be disappointed by this. But we want to express our sincere gratitude for your participation in this fantastic trip. I adore you. Never overlook.

A mystery unfolded on the deck of a vessel carrying migrants out of the old continent as it headed west in the 1899 television series. The passengers, a diverse group of European descent, are brought together by their aspirations for the twenty-first century and their futures overseas. But when they come across another migrant ship drifting on the open sea, their trip takes an unexpected turn. Their journey to the promised land will become a terrifying nightmare due to what they will discover on board.

Andreas Pietschmann, Lucas Lynggaard Tnnesen, Miguel Bernardeau, Mathilde Ollivier, Emily Beecham, Aneurin Barnard, Isabella Wei, and Clara Rosager make up the series’ ensemble cast.

Executive producers and co-showrunners on the project were Friese and bo Odar. Bo Odar directed while Friese acted as the author.
