Drishyam 2 by Ajay Devgn, Tabu, Akshaye Khanna, and Shriya Saran had a very strong opening day at the box office, with occupancy rates of 40%. This makes it the second-highest opening day of 2022 behind Brahmastra, surpassing Bhool Bhulaiya 2 and Ram Setu for hindi movies, and the sixth-highest opening day overall. Ajay Devgan’s opening day is also the highest non-holiday opening day of his career, surpassing Tanhaji most certainly.
The fact that Drishyam 2 is a sequel to the 2015 film Drishyam, which has a franchise attached to it, may account for its strong start. The lesson for Bollywood seems to be that franchises are the way to go, just like they are in Hollywood, as evidenced by the fact that Bhool Bhoolaiya 2 was also a franchise.
The best advance booking for 2022, after Brahmastra and before Bhool Bhoolaiya 2, was for Drishyam 2.
